1.  When's the best time to reserve a place for my child?

Its never too early to register.  Pretty much from birth onwards.  However, we have just registered our son (18months) and it seems it is likely that he will get a place although nobody could guarantee it.

2.   How many sessions can my child attend?

Your child can attend as many sessions as can be provided by the school.  Although some schools advise that smaller children are not in all sessions to begin with.

3.  How much does it cost?

The government will pay for a maximum of 5 2.5 hour sessions a week for each term after a child's 3rd birthday.  If the session at the school is 3 hours you may have to pay for the extra half an hour at each session or pick up or drop off early.

Prices for 2 year olds is per session and varies between £6 and £12.  Contact the school for the exact prices.  We are not publishing them here as they seem to change quite regularly.

4.  What age can my child be to attend?

Anytime from around 2  and half until they reach primary school age at 5.

5. Is lunch provided?

Not usually.  But some schools have a lunch session where you provide a packed lunch for your child.  This is quite a good way to introduce the older ones to the school-lunch and eating together concept in readiness for primary school.

6. Does my child have to be potty trained?

Not usually no.  It seems that nappies will be changed only if they are very soiled or wet.

7. What's the procedure for registering?

Call up the school and arrange for a visit.  Providers will be happy to show you round, describe the activities and answer any questions you may have.  If you like what you see you can put your child on the waiting list there and then.

8.  Can I put my child on more than one pre-school list?

There is no charge to put your child on a list and if you want to make sure that you get a place somewhere it is best to register with more than one nursery.  When the time comes to start you will be free to accept or reject the place offered.

9.   Where can I see the government inspection reports online?

The ofsted website: www.ofsted.gov.uk

Ofsted is a non-ministerial government department established under the Education (Schools) Act 1992 to take responsibility for the inspection of all schools in England, whether state or independent.   The reports that are produced show the results of the inspections.  The reports are extensive and include outlining strengths and weaknesses and improvements since the last review.    You can download or view online any report for any school by visiting the site above.

10.   Where can I get more information?

Besides ringing the nursery direct, Childcarelink has a great site with more Frequently Asked Questions and you can download a leaflet.  Click Here to visit.  We are hoping to start a review system on child-friendly.  There is no better informed recommendation (or criticism) than from those having hands-on experience with these schools with their own children.  We encourage anyone with experiences worth sharing (good or bad) to Let us Know.
